World Mental Health Day!

The World Mental Health Day is globally observed on 10th of October every year. The objective is to draw our attention and raise awareness of the importance of Mental & Emotional Health and Well-being.

Why mental health matters?

Our health will be incomplete without good mental health. Hence, any complete and full health would need to incorporate mental health along with others.

Good mental health will give resilience and aids to cope/deal with our difficult / stressful situations in a better manner. Thus, boosting optimism, confidence and overall happiness which translates into improved quality of life!

According to the National Mental Health Survey, approximately 14% of India’s population were experiencing variety of mental illnesses like Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar disorder and/or Substance misuse. There is also rising concern about the mental health of youth with increasing suicidal rates.

Various factors including socio – economic stress, stigma around mental health, lack of awareness and limited access to mental health services continues to exacerbate these issues.

As almost 60% of the world’s population is in work and 15% of working age adults were estimated to have mental health issues. Globally an estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year secondary to depression and anxiety, costing $ 1 trillion USD per year in lost productivity.

WHO declared this year’s theme as ” Workplace Mental Health

Workplace Mental Health Issues:

India ranks high globally for work related stress and burnout particularly in sectors like IT, Finance, Health Care and Education.

High levels of job-related stress, long working hours and demanding expectations leads to burnouts. Depression and anxiety are increasingly common due to factors like job insecurities, lack of work – life balance and performance pressures. This leads to high levels of absenteeism and virtual absenteeism (physically present but mentally disengaged at work).

Management:

So, there is an urgent need to promote awareness and education on the importance of good mental health and well-being, incorporating mental health in leadership training, to create supportive work environment and offering Employees Assistance Programs (EAP) through steps taken at various levels from Government, Organizations, Societal to individuals

Also, both the individuals and Organizations should focus on work – Life balance, stress management programs, Skill development and well-being programs and regular mental health check-ins. Also incentivizing mental health practices to prevent and promote mental health and positive well-being, bringing in insurance coverage for mental health issues management will reduce stigma, promote early steps for both prevention and management of mental health issues.

These steps will promote workplace mental health and thereby reduce employee’s turnover and absenteeism, better work engagement and productivity. This will also promote sense of confidence, purpose and achievement among individuals and will create better working atmosphere and positive relationships.
